Sophie Hannah’s first novel Little Face [ISBN 978 0 340 84032 0] is a pretty accomplished thriller – scary and suspenseful with psychological tautness and hostility that builds and builds. However, I did feel a tad cheated when grew to realise what the ending would be.

However, I did feel a tad cheated when grew to realise what the ending would be. Alice Fancourt, just two weeks after having her daughter is persuaded to go out and look round her local spa but when she gets back and goes into the nursery the child she finds in the cot she insists is not her daughter, but a stranger she has not seen before. Her husband cannot believe what she says and becomes increasingly hostile and menacing – accusing her of being mad or lying. Kate has to try to make the police believe her – but how ?
