Mike Lawson’s terrorist/crime/political thriller Dead on Arrival [978 0 00 725629 7] is a good solid read; its not that the plot is particularly brilliant – though you don’t know that at the outset, but the way he strings out the narrative to keep the reader hooked is very skilful. It has a very current lively feel and raises interesting issues about the war on terror and its advantages for politicians.

It has a very current lively feel and raises interesting issues about the war on terror and its advantages for politicians. A terrorist incident – an Asian attempting to fly an aeroplane into a building – is privately queried by John Mahoney, Speaker of the house, because he knows the perpetrator and can’t believe it. He asks Joe DeMarco – a fixer with an iffy past, to see if he can find out more about it – but then other attacks follow. Joe smells a rat, and follows a trail that suggests political chicanery, but steps into danger as he is seen to be getting near.
