Dead Irish is John Lescroart’s first novel in the Dismas Hardy series [ISBN 0 451 21427 7] and it is stylish and professionally written, a murder mystery with skilful turns, dry dialogue and a nice quickly-moving narrative. Dismas Hardy is also a pretty unusual and unwilling detective too.
Dismas ex-attorney and ex-cop is now a bartender, and doesn’t want to get involved with the death of Eddie, a relative of his boss, even though the whole family believe the death is not a suicide but a murder. However, Hardy does promise to look into things and soon gets involved in further murders and a web of deceit built around the death of Eddie. Everyone seems to have something to hide.
