On the whole Michael Robotham’s Shatter [ISBN 978 1 84744 177 5] is a very well-written and powerful novel. Its psychological brainwashing-type theme is believable, with the perpetrator half-hidden from the reader, and the unlikely sleuth – vulnerable Parkinson-sufferer with marital problems- somewhat distracted and yet obsessed- which makes for all kinds of undercurrents and themes. It is quite creepy and is not ideal bedtime reading. On the whole Michael Robotham’s Shatter [ISBN 978 1 84744 177 5] is a very well-written and powerful novel. A woman, naked but for her red high heels is teetering on Clifton Suspension bridge, weeping into her mobile phone. Psychologist Joe O’Loughlin – called in default of others being available- tries to talk her down but she jumps anyway. Joe is later visited by her 16 year old daughter who says her mother would never have jumped. He then becomes embroiled in the investigation of an act only he begins to believe is murder, and which is followed by others that are linked which clearly ARE murder – and his wife gets more and more annoyed about the 16 year old staying with them (and what is she doing when away from home anyway). Joe gets more and more confused before he begins to stick clues together.
