John Connolly’s The Unquiet [ISBN 978 0 340 92051] took quite a lot of getting into – it is quite dense and nothing much happened at the outset. It’s a brooding, unsettling kind of book, with no little light along the way. Not a bad plot, and the narrative eventually gets going. Quite turgid characters, though he does a good line in heavies and baddies. Dr Daniel Clay’s daughter hires Charlie Parker to stop a man harassing her – this man, it appears wants to track down her father who is missing presumed dead, though the stalker does not believe this. Dr Daniel Clay worked with children who were sexually abused and there is some taint whether he himself was involved – a number of children had been abducted and abused before he disappeared, but none afterwards. Charlie Parker soon finds things much more complicated that he had thought, and gets into all kinds of danger pursuing the truth.
