Elizabeth George just gets better and better, this latest novel What Came Before He Shot Her [ISBN 978 0 340 93557 6] is quite remarkable. Telling a quite heartbreaking story of the life of an innocent young boy trying, even through the most chaotic of lifestyles, to protect his vulnerable brother for the tough life, and the problems this leads him into. The characters draw you in, the narrative is tight and compelling, and the reader is led into knowing about lives and ways of living few will have realised.

The Campbell children, Vanessa, Joel and Toby have, through fate got a rotten deal, mixed race, their father dead and mother in a mental institution, their grandmother leaves them on the steps outside their Aunt’s without telling them or her. Kendra is dropped on – she is just getting her life together and setting up her business and knows little about bringing up children, especially those as off-the rails as Ness, and with strange behaviour like Toby. Toby’s strangeness soon gets him bullied and picked on in this new area and it takes all Joel’s resources to try and protect him. But what a price it takes from him. A stunning story.
