Tess Gerritson’s novel Never Say Die [ISBN 13 978 0 7783 0114 1 ] has a different kind of story line – a daughter searching for her father lost in Vietnam – and so gives an unusual interest and twist to the tale of skulduggery and political underhandedness. Characterisations are reasonable and the developing relationship between the two main characters adds a frisson of interest, but Gerritson never allows it to sideline the plot. Willy Jane Maitland is looking for answers about her father’s plane crash in the Vietnam jungle 20 years ago, because her mother wants to know the truth before she dies. She knows there is some deep mystery and soon understands this raking up the past is going to be dangerous for her. She hooks up (unwillingly) with Guy Barnard who is a forensic anthropologist, ex army office and now mercenary who is willing to travel with her for his own nefarious reasons, though their growing attraction gives him more motives. As the people they talk to are killed they realise how very dangerous their search is to someone. But who ?
