Sally Beauman’s novel The Landscape of Love [ISBN 0 7515 3687 3] has as its centre an enigmatic mystery amongst other mysteries gently and cleverly unfolded – in a sad tale about three sisters and their relationships with each other and others. The book begins in the first person narrative of the youngest daughter Maisie, whom we would now call autistic or similar and her particularly sharply observed but not always understood actions of her two older sister, and Lucas, who is painting a picture of all three of them and a series of paintings of Maisie, and of Daniel Nunn, a village friend. Something awful happens at the end of the summer and Maisie voice is lost, and the rest of the story looks at what happened and why.
